Independent research, on commission Reports for SaaS founders

Sightline
Reports

Competitive landscape research for indie SaaS founders and bootstrapped operators. Commissioned per-project. Delivered in three to seven days.

You are about to build a thing, or change the price of a thing, or enter a market where someone has already built the thing. Before you do, somebody should map the territory.

Sightline is a small research practice that produces detailed competitive landscape reports on commission. We cover the kind of B2B SaaS, developer tooling, and productivity software niches where the founder needs to know — concretely — who is already there, what they charge, what their users complain about, and where the unoccupied ground actually is.

The work is AI-augmented. Every claim is traced to a public source, and every report is reviewed by a human before it ships. We say this on the homepage because we think the alternative — pretending otherwise — insults the buyer.

Method

Research that actually reads the source.

Most "competitor research" is a blog post written from the top three Google results. Ours is the opposite. We assemble the evidence first — pricing pages, changelogs, G2 reviews, App Store listings, public funding records, founder interviews — and synthesize from there.

Every factual claim in a Sightline report is traceable to a cited source included in an appendix. If a number can't be sourced, it doesn't go in.

  1. Scoping

A short call (or async brief) confirms the niche, the target buyer, the questions you actually want answered, and what you'll do with the report. We push back if the brief is too broad to be useful.

  2. Evidence

We gather pricing, positioning, feature sets, review sentiment, traffic and growth signals from public sources. No paywalled databases, no fabricated data, no scraped LinkedIn.

  3. Synthesis

The deliverable is structured around the questions you asked, not a generic template. Comparison tables where they help. Plain prose where it helps more.

  4. Review & ship

Human review pass on every claim and citation before delivery. You receive the report as a Notion document and a PDF. One round of revisions included.

Commissions

Choose the depth of sightline you need.

All three reports cover the same kind of work — competitive landscape, positioning, pricing, and gaps. The tier you choose determines breadth, depth, and the strategic synthesis layer at the end. Pricing is fixed; no scope-creep invoices on the back end.

Frequently asked

Plain answers to reasonable questions.

You said "AI-augmented" — how should I think about that?
We use modern AI tools (primarily Claude) for the heavy lifting of reading sources, structuring evidence, and producing first-draft synthesis. A human reviews every factual claim against its cited source before the report ships. The trade-off you're getting: depth and breadth that wouldn't be economical if a human analyst were producing each line by hand. The thing we won't trade off: accuracy.
What sources do you use?
Public ones. Company websites, pricing pages, changelogs, public review sites (G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, app stores, Reddit), public funding records, founder interviews, podcast transcripts, public investor decks. We don't use paywalled data services like PitchBook or Similarweb paid tier, so if you need that depth, this isn't the right service.
What's outside your scope?
Primary research (we don't conduct user interviews on your behalf). Investment, legal, medical, or compliance advice. Anything requiring proprietary data we'd have to purchase. Highly regulated verticals where a wrong fact creates downside risk for your business. If you ask for one of these, we'll tell you and decline cleanly rather than scope around it.
How fast can you actually deliver?
Brief in 3 business days, Survey in 5, Atlas in 7. The clock starts the day after we receive payment and your scoping brief. If a deadline is non-negotiable for you, tell us before commissioning so we can confirm the timeline matches our queue.
What if the report isn't useful?
Refund policy is below. Short version: full refund if cancelled before work begins, 50% refund if cancelled before draft delivery, no refund after draft delivery. You also get one revision round at no charge to address scope misses or factual issues.
Can you do verticals outside SaaS?
Sometimes. The method works wherever the evidence is public and the questions are answerable from public evidence. Email us with what you're considering and we'll tell you honestly whether it's a fit.
Policies

Refund policy

We want this transaction to be fair to both parties. Our policy:

  • Before work begins — full refund, no questions.
  • After scoping, before draft delivery — 50% refund.
  • After draft delivery — no refund, but one revision round is included to address scope misses or factual issues.

If you believe a delivered report contains factual errors, contact us and we will correct them at no charge. Refund requests should be sent to hello@sightlinereport.com and are processed within 5 business days.

Terms & privacy

Confidentiality. Anything you share about your business during scoping is treated as confidential. We will not share, publish, or reuse your specific brief, your competitive questions, or any non-public information you provide.

Deliverable ownership. Reports you commission are yours to use however you wish: internally, in fundraising materials, in board decks, or quoted publicly with attribution.

Data we collect. Email address, name, company name, payment information (handled by Stripe), and the contents of your project brief. We don't run analytics or tracking on this site beyond standard hosting logs.

No financial, legal, or medical advice. Reports are informational research products. They are not investment advice, legal advice, medical advice, or any form of professional counsel.
